The Orion

The Orion
The Orion is to Mapex what the Maple Custom is to Yamaha, the flagship to the Mapex fleet. Somewhat unusually Mapex do not sell the Orion as a preconfigured kit, choosing only sell by component, this ensures maximum versatility to the drummer in choosing the composition of their kit. Presentation is a key feature of this kit. The 7-ply maple shells are finished with an outer ply of hand chosen burl maple, unique in the Mapex range. The bass is 7.5mm, and the toms 6.1mm. As expected, the Isolated Tom Mounting System is provided throughout along with spring loaded floor tom legs. All hardware is available in chrome, black or gold. If you require ultimate freedom and the ability to custom design your own kit, the Mapex Orion is a great choice.

Moving on up the line, you find the Mapex Saturn, situated towards the top end of the drum market, this kit is aimed at the professional musician, however it is priced remarkable keenly, closer to mid-range levels. The shells are a hybrid of maple and walnut, two inner plies being walnut while the 4 exterior plies are maple. The bass shell is 7.5mm and the toms are 5.1mm. Quality of lacquered finish is again high. The 750 series hardware on this kit is a treat, available in chrome or black, the Isolated Tom Mount System is applied throughout, with the floor tom featuring spring loaded legs. The kit has a lot of resonance with a rich tone and wide tuning range. Mapex have used Remo Ambassador heads on the snare and base drums with Emperor batter heads on the toms. If your thinking of buying a Meridian Series kit, it's worth considering holding off until you can afford the price jump up to the Saturn, the quality and sound of this kit is just jaw dropping for the price.

Launched nicely into the middle of the range for 2009 are the sisters, Meridian Maple and Meridian Birch. The Meridian Maple features 7-ply 5.8mm toms and snare and a 7.2mm base drum, while the birch option features 6-ply 7.2mm toms, snare and base. Both kits utilise the Isolated Tom Mount System and 700 series Mapex hardware, with a redesigned lug for lower overall mass. Remo UT heads are used throughout. These kits are set apart from their Q and QR series cousins primarily by their Maple and Birch shells but also by their finishing which is a real treat. The eight coat hand sanded lacquer finish really pops! The quality of finish plays a big part in why these are Mapex's most popular kits.
